Patek Philippe Calatrava 5226G-001 Remake: Is the Classic Style Worth It?

Man, I’ve always been a watch guy. Not in a super flashy way, but I appreciate a good timepiece, you know? Something classic, something that’ll still look good fifty years from now. So, for the longest time, I’ve had my eye on the Patek Philippe Calatrava. That thing is just pure class. But let’s be real, the price tag on those is insane.

So, I started thinking, “Why not try to make my own version?” Not a fake, mind you, but an homage. Something that captures that same vibe without, you know, costing a small fortune.

I started by looking at pictures, lots of pictures. The Calatrava 5226G-001, that’s the one I really liked. White gold, super clean dial, just beautiful. I spent hours just staring at it, trying to figure out what made it tick, literally and figuratively. I noticed the round face, the simple hands, the way the light plays off the case…It’s just really well put together.

Then came the hard part – finding the parts. I wanted a case that felt substantial, something with a bit of weight to it, but I also wanted that white gold look. That was harder than I thought it’d be. I checked out a bunch of different online stores, found some that were close, but nothing that really felt right. It took a while, but I finally found a decent 40mm case with a similar shape. It wasn’t perfect, but it was close enough for this project. I figured an 8.53mm thickness would be about right, so I went with that.

  • Case: Finding the right case was a pain. I wanted that white gold look, but most of what I found was either too cheap-looking or way too expensive.
  • Movement: This was another tricky one. I didn’t need anything fancy, just something reliable. I ended up going with a basic automatic movement, nothing too crazy. I wanted to imitate the 26-330 S C, but settled for less.
  • Dial: I wanted a clean, simple dial like the original. I found a plain white one that I thought would work well.
  • Hands: These were surprisingly easy to find. Just some simple, elegant hands that matched the style of the Calatrava.
  • Strap: I found a couple, actually. One was this nice, textured beige one, and the other was a classic black one. I figured it’d be nice to have options.

Putting it all together was…an experience. I’m not exactly a watchmaker, so there was a lot of trial and error. I messed up a couple of times, had to order some extra parts, but eventually, I got it all working. It wasn’t easy, let me tell you. My hands were cramping, my eyes were strained, but seeing it all come together was worth it.

The Final Result

It’s not a Patek, obviously. But it’s mine. And I’m pretty proud of it. It’s got that same classic, elegant look that I love about the Calatrava. It’s not perfect, there are some things that I’d probably do differently next time, but overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out.

I’ve been wearing it for a few weeks now, and I gotta say, it feels good. It’s comfortable, it keeps time well, and it looks great. It’s not going to fool anyone into thinking it’s a real Patek, but that wasn’t the point. The point was to create something that I could be proud of, something that captured the spirit of a watch that I really admire. And I think I did that.

This whole thing has been a good reminder that you don’t need to spend a ton of money to get something you like. Sometimes, a little bit of effort and creativity can go a long way.
