Remake PP 6119R-001 Classic Style: A Great Patek Philippe Calatrava Alternative?

Alright, so I got my hands dirty today with something a bit fancy – trying to remake that slick Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001. You know, the one that screams “classic” but also “I’ve got style”? Yeah, that one. I’ve always been a fan of these classy watches, and I thought, why not try to recreate it?

Getting Started

First things first, I gathered all the stuff I needed. I dug out my old watchmaking tools, some basic ones that I picked up from a hobby store a while back. Nothing too professional, just enough to tinker around. Then I found some decent materials that wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg. We’re talking about some good-quality metal for the case, some leather for the strap, and a nice piece of glass for the watch face.

I started with the watch case. I wanted that rose gold look, so I picked a metal that could be polished to look like it. I got to work, carefully shaping it, trying to copy the elegant curves of the Calatrava. It was tough, honestly. Lots of filing, polishing, and then some more filing. I messed up a couple of times, ngl, but hey, that’s part of the process, right?

The Fiddly Bits

Next up was the dial. Man, this was a pain. I tried to make it as clean and simple as the original. I used a thin sheet of metal and painted it white. Then came the hour markers – those little lines that tell you the time. I decided to go with simple lines, just like the 6119R. Drawing those on was a nightmare. My hands were shaking like crazy. I used a super fine brush and black paint, but it still took me a bunch of tries to get them somewhat straight.

  • Shaped the watch case from metal.
  • Polished it to get that rose gold vibe.
  • Painted a metal sheet white for the dial.
  • Painstakingly drew on the hour markers.

Putting It All Together

The hands were another challenge. I shaped them out of thin pieces of metal, trying to get that sleek, pointy look. I painted them black, of course. Then came the really tricky part – the movement. I didn’t even try to make my own. I’m not a magician. I just bought a cheap quartz movement and fitted it inside the case. I connected the hands, and bam, it was ticking!

Finally, I attached the leather strap. I cut it to the right size, punched some holes, and sewed it together. Nothing fancy, just a simple, classic strap. I then fixed it to the watch case, and boom – my homemade Calatrava was done.

The Final Product

It’s definitely not perfect. It’s got its flaws, for sure. The lines aren’t perfectly straight, the polish isn’t flawless, and it’s not fooling anyone into thinking it’s a real Patek Philippe. But you know what? I made it. And it’s working! It’s ticking away on my wrist right now, and that’s pretty darn cool if you ask me. This whole thing was a fun little project. It taught me a lot about watchmaking, and it gave me a new appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into these luxury watches.
