Alright, let’s talk about this Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Reverso Tribute Monoface watch I tried to imitate. I saw this watch on their official online store and thought, “Hey, that looks pretty slick, I wonder if I can make something like that.” So, I decided to give it a shot.
First off, I started looking around for resources. I mean, these Jaeger-LeCoultre watches are not easy to copy, those guys are seriously good at what they do. Their craftsmanship is top-notch, and mimicking that is a real challenge. But I wasn’t deterred. I spent a good chunk of time on the internet, reading articles, forums, and anything I could find about the Reverso, especially the Monoface model.
I learned that the watch I was interested in, the Tribute Monoface, has this unique steel case. It’s pretty cool, actually. You can press it in and flip it around to show the other side, which is usually blank. I thought, “Okay, that’s going to be tricky to replicate, but let’s see.” I also found out that it runs on JLC’s caliber 822, a hand-wound movement that ticks at 21,600 vibrations per hour. I don’t even know how they make something that precise, to be honest.
So, I started experimenting. My first few attempts were, well, let’s just say they were far from perfect. Getting the case to flip properly was a nightmare. I tried different materials, different mechanisms, but nothing seemed to work quite right. I even thought about giving up a couple of times, but I’m not one to back down easily. I kept tinkering, trying to get it closer to the real thing. I tried different materials and movements, but let’s be honest, most of them ended up looking like cheap knock-offs.
- First try: Total disaster. The case wouldn’t even close properly.
- Second try: A bit better, but the flipping mechanism was janky as heck.
- Third try: Got the flipping somewhat right, but the overall look was way off.
After numerous failed attempts, I had to admit to myself it will not be possible to make a copy with the tools and skills I have. Although the real Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Reverso Tribute Monoface is a great watch, but copying it is beyond my reach right now. I learned a lot about watches during this process and maybe someday I’ll try again.
I read somewhere that these watches are actually a good investment. They hold their value well. Maybe I should just save up and buy a real one someday. Anyway, that’s my story about trying to imitate the Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Reverso Tribute Monoface. It was a fun, albeit frustrating, experience. I guess some things are just better left to the professionals, right?
