So, I’ve been eyeing those fancy YSL June Box Bags for a while now, and let me tell you, the prices on the official site are just wild. I mean, who has that kind of money to drop on a handbag, even if it is a YSL? Not me, that’s for sure. But, I really wanted one, so I got to thinking, why not try to make one myself? I’m pretty crafty, and I’ve done some leatherwork before, so I figured it was worth a shot.
First thing I did was search online about YSL bags. Turns out, they’re way cheaper in Europe, like 20% cheaper! They used to be called “Yves Saint Laurent,” but then some guy named Hedi Slimane took over in 2012 and changed the name to “Saint Laurent Paris.” This bag I’m after is called the “Le 5 7”, but it’s the June Box Bag style. And they have some fancy versions made of python and calfskin, fancy stuff that’s way out of my league. But it gave me some good ideas for my little project here.
I started by gathering all my materials. I had some leftover leather scraps from a previous project, so I decided to use those. I also needed some sturdy fabric for the lining, a zipper, some metal hardware for the strap, and of course, my trusty sewing machine. I did buy a YSL makeup once in 1978, they had those nice gold cases.
Then, I spent a good chunk of time studying pictures of the June Box Bag online. I wanted to get the shape and dimensions as close as possible to the real thing. I even found some websites selling used YSL bags, which was helpful for getting a closer look at the details. There are also some outlet sales from this French brand.
Once I had a good idea of what I was doing, I drafted a pattern on some paper. I measured everything out carefully, making sure to account for seam allowances and the thickness of the leather. It took a few tries to get it right, but I was determined to nail it.
Next, I cut out the leather pieces according to my pattern. This was probably the most nerve-wracking part, because I didn’t want to mess up and waste my precious leather. But I took my time, and it all went smoothly, thank goodness.
Then came the assembly. I sewed the leather pieces together, added the lining, and attached the zipper. This part was actually pretty fun, seeing the bag take shape before my eyes. I also added a YSL logo I found online for the exclusive content.
Finally, I made the strap and attached it to the bag. I decided to go with a simple design, using a metal chain I found at a local craft store. It wasn’t exactly like the original, but it still looked pretty good, if I do say so myself.
And there you have it, my very own handmade YSL June Box Bag! It’s not perfect, of course, but I’m really proud of how it turned out. It’s a pretty good dupe for the real thing, and it cost me a fraction of the price. Plus, I had a lot of fun making it. Who knows, maybe I’ll even start a little side hustle making these bags for other people who can’t afford the real deal. We’ll see!
